While the families of the Genoese aristocracy had completely renovated many of the old mansions in the historic center, by the mid-16th century the most important families had, through a true land division, built new, richly appointed residences in a run-down area on the outskirts of the city. These residences, consisting of an atrium, courtyard, grand staircase, and garden, were adorned with decorations and paintings by artists of the time. This is how Strada Nuova (today Via Garibaldi) was born.

The buildings initially listed in the Rolli system numbered 162; today, 42, both public and private, are recognized by UNESCO. Among the main ones are:

Palazzo di Antonio Doria (Doria-Spinola)

Built between 1541 and 1543 for Admiral Antonio Doria, the palace passed to the Spinola family in 1624. It is distinguished by its monumental entrance portal and inner courtyard. On the first floor, the loggia gallery, the work of Aurelio Calvi, is adorned with city views dating back to 1584, documenting the broad interests of the commissioner, a strategist for the Spanish Crown. Inside, there are important frescoed salons, most notably the room dedicated to Apollo shooting arrows at the Greeks at the gates of Troy and the room dedicated to Hercules fighting the Amazons. Currently, the palace houses the headquarters of the Prefecture.

Palazzo Tomaso Spinola (Pessagno)

Built by Giovanni Battista Castello between 1558 and 1561, the building stands out for its imposing facade decorated with frescoes and stuccoes, and for the striking portal adorned with female herms. The interior is richly frescoed.
